Is there a fee to participate?

Yes, there is a whopping fee of $3 per rated game, or $50/year for club membership. These funds go directly to maintaining the location, and USCF rating fees.

 What is the club’s format?

Each Thursday night members arrive with their own chess sets and chess clocks as early as 6:40PM but no later than 7:00PM as late entrants will not be paired for a tournament game. At 7:05 the tournament director posts a pairing sheet where the players discover their opponents, and then sit at their boards to play their matches. The club mainly uses a “ladder” format, which basically means each player is paired with whomever is closest to his/her skill level. Each player starts with 1 hour 40 minutes on his or her clock, which means each game can possibly last for a total of 3 hours 20 minutes. At the end of each month, the player with the best cumulative results wins the tournament and a $50 cash prize!!!

What age, and skill levels can participate?

We have a strict policy that our members must be between 12 months and 120 years of age, no exceptions! Beginners are warmly welcome! (just know the basic rules of chess.) The tournament director takes pride in ensuring the most welcoming friendly atmosphere to all!

Can I just attend to play a casual game of chess?

Yes! our McMahon’s location is ideally spacious for casual play with food and drink in the exterior rooms! Please respect the restaurant by ordering some sort of food or beverage, and don’t forget to tip!

Who makes the best chocolate ice cream?

Haagen Dazs definitely, hands down makes the best chocolate ice cream, even though it’s rather expensive, and the name is pure marketing because its entire history is within the USA.
Speaking of food– drinks are allowed inside the tournament room. Food is not allowed inside the tournament room.
